This made it impossible for her to call the nurse by ringing the bell, when no one was around- Virtual assistant would have come handy here!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>&#8216;Alexa, call the nurse&#8217; and Alexa would reply &#8216;Sure, I have sent a notification to nurse for further assistance&#8217;. <\/span><b>WOW!<\/b><\/p>\n<p>On a funny note, I recently came across a news where a kid got his Maths homework done by asking Alexa the questions! Isn\u2019t that interesting?<\/p>\n<h4><span>Why Virtual\/Voice Assistance?<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span>Looking at the technology evolution of late, there are several devices available in market, with Voice Assistants like Apple Siri (2011), Google Assistant (2012), Microsoft Cortana (2014), Amazon Alexa (2015) to name a few. These are already providing \u201cvirtual assistance\u201d and helping people in many ways &#8211;offering an <\/span><i><span>individualized<\/span><\/i><span> experience while \u201clistening\u201d to multiple speakers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>At Blazeclan, we started developing capabilities\/skills for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Amazon-Echo-And-Alexa-Devices\/b?ie=UTF8&amp;node=9818047011\"><span>Amazon Alexa<\/span><\/a><span> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/store.google.com\/product\/google_home\"><span>Google Home<\/span><\/a><span> devices. We developed a skill which can fulfil the requirement of a \u201cNurse\u201d who could be there to \u201clisten\u201d to a patient 24\/7. The patient would just have to start interacting saying \u201cAlexa\u201d or \u201cOk Google\u201d; and there comes our \u2018virtual nurse\u2019 asking the patient \u201cHow may I help you ?\u201d, and then acting upon the request.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span><b>Under the hood<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span>Let\u2019s take a look at how to go about a skill using <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/developer.amazon.com\/alexa-skills-kit\/start\"><span>Alexa Skill Console<\/span><\/a><span> for Alexa and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dialogflow.com\/docs\/getting-started\" class=\"broken_link\"><span>Dialogflow<\/span><\/a><span> for Google Assistant. Let\u2019s name our skill \u201cNurse\u201d. Once the skill is ready, we\u2019ll need to add the sample utterances that user (patient) would usually state while interacting. These all utterances will be grouped under <\/span><i><span>intents<\/span><\/i><span>, and accordingly, the response to these utterances would be defined. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Let\u2019s understand with an example:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Intent : <\/b><span>Uncomfortable<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Utterance sample :<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span>\u201cI am feeling uncomfortable.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>\u201cI am not ok.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>\u201cI am not feeling good.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>\u201cSomething is bothering me.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>\u201cNeed a help.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Response :<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span>\u201cWhat is making you uncomfortable\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>\u201cHow may I help you\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>\u201cWhat is bothering you\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span>Similarly, there would be multiple intents, set of sample utterance under each intent, and a corresponding responses to them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Example of some sample interactions are as follows:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span>Patient: \u201cAlexa, open Nurse\u201d or \u201cOk google, talk to nurse\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span>Voice Assistant: \u201cHello how may I help you\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span>Patient: \u201cI am feeling uncomfortable\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span>Voice Assistant: \u201cWhat is making you uncomfortable\u201d.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span>Patient: \u201cAC temperature is too high\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span>Voice Assistant: \u201cHow much temperature would you like me to set\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span>Patient: \u201c20 degrees\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span>Voice Assistant: \u201cSetting AC temperature to 20 degrees\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-16447 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blazeclan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Echo-Voice-Architecture-1024x568-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"568\"><\/p>\n<p><span>In the first step \u2018Speech To Text\u2019 the device listens to the statement and converts the voice command to the text input that voice assistant understands.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Under the hood, the software breaks your speech down into tiny, recognizable parts called <\/span><i><span>phonemes<\/span><\/i><span>. It\u2019s the order, combination and context of these <\/span><i><span>phonemes<\/span><\/i><span> that allows the sophisticated audio analysis software to figure out what exactly user is saying. For words that are pronounced the same way, such as \u2018eight\u2019 and \u2018ate\u2019, the software analyzes the context and syntax of the sentence to figure out the best text match for the word you spoke.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The second step \u2018Text To Intent\u2019, interprets what exactly does the user mean. Voice Assistant works out what the question is asking, this is done with the help of a function &#8212; either <a href=\"https:\/\/blazeclan.com\/en-eu\/blog\/aws-lambda-reasons-why-developers-should-use-lambda\/\">AWS Lambda or Google Functions<\/a> &#8211;which, in turn, triggers the appropriate Intent. AWS lambda or Google Function contains the code which makes the voice assistant better understand the utterance and come up with an appropriate response. These function can be written in multiple coding languages ex. Java, Node.js, Python, to name a few.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The final step \u2018Intent to action\u2019 aims to fulfil the user\u2019s need, then works out some possible answers based on the information it has in hand. If any Intent requires API to be called, it is typically taken care by AWS Lambda function or Google Function itself.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span><b>Conclusion<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span>Thus, we see that Voice assistants in the form of Amazon Alexa or Google Home, come-in handy in several of the real world situations.
