Improving AWS Cost Visibility and Financial Control for a Leading Infection Prevention Technology Provider

About Client

The client is a globally recognized leader in infection prevention technology, known for their proprietary sonically activated hydrogen peroxide devices used in the high-level disinfection (HLD) of ultrasound probes. Their innovative solutions help reduce the risk of transmitting harmful infections and meet stringent accreditation standards from major health organizations. With a strong commitment to safety, compliance, and healthcare innovation, the company supports medical providers across the globe.

Client Challenge

Operating within the healthcare sector, the client faced increasing challenges in understanding and managing their AWS service costs. With multiple standalone AWS accounts and limited visibility into cost breakdowns, the organization lacked the financial insights necessary for effective budgeting, forecasting, and departmental accountability. They required a centralized cost management solution that would:

  • Provide a clear and unified view of AWS spend
  • Improve accuracy in cost allocation across departments
  • Enable proactive budgeting and spending control
  • Maintain compliance and operational efficiency in a regulated industry

Blazeclan Solution

To address these challenges, Blazeclan implemented a comprehensive AWS cost optimization strategy by centralizing the client’s cloud accounts and deploying a structured tagging model. The approach included:

  • Consolidating AWS Accounts: All standalone AWS accounts were invited into the client’s AWS Organization to enable centralized billing and management.
  • Implementing Resource Tagging: A consistent tagging strategy was applied, enabling resources to be tracked and categorized by department.
  • Utilizing AWS Cost Explorer: Tagged resources were analysed using AWS Cost Explorer to generate detailed reports by department, identifying spending patterns and optimization opportunities.
  • Deploying Budget Alerts: Budgets and thresholds were established, with alerts configured to monitor usage anomalies and prevent overspending.

Outcome/Result

Blazeclan successfully implemented a centralized cost management and visibility solution tailored to the client’s AWS environment. Key outcomes included:

  • Centralized Cost Management: All standalone AWS accounts were integrated into the client’s AWS Organization, enabling unified billing and streamlined cost oversight.
  • Enhanced Visibility into Resource Usage: AWS resources were consistently tagged, improving transparency and enabling department-level tracking.
  • Improved Cost Allocation: Cost Explorer reports now accurately reflect departmental usage, supporting more informed decision-making and analysis.
  • Increased Budget Awareness: Departments gained access to their own cost data, leading to greater awareness and enabling better alignment with budget allocations.
  • Cost Optimization Opportunities Identified: Analysis through Cost Explorer helped uncover 10–20% potential cost savings through resource optimization.
  • Reduction in Unallocated Costs: Less than 5% of AWS spend remains untagged, significantly improving the accuracy of financial reporting.
  • Alert and Notification Setup: Cost-related alerts and notifications were configured to monitor budget thresholds and detect anomalies, supporting proactive cost management.
  • Scalable Financial Reporting: The tagging and reporting framework now supports detailed, department-level insights, contributing to more structured financial reporting and accountability.

Impact Highlights

  • 10–20% cost savings: Through resource optimization
  • < 5% unallocated AWS costs: Significantly reduced untagged resources, improving cost allocation accuracy.
